Etna Live: Is Mount Etna Erupting Today?
Current status, 14 September: arrivals at Catania are suspended until 16:00.A strong ash emission from the summit craters has built an eruptive column of roughly4 km, drifting south. INGV has the aviation code at red, airspace sector C1 is closed, and inbound flights are being diverted to Palermo. SAC is telling passengers to check with their airline before travelling to the airport.
Departures are not covered by that suspension β the order is on arrivals. In practice a departure still depends on the aircraft that was due to bring it, so delays and knock-on cancellations are likely even on flights out. The 16:00 end time is the current limit, not a promise: it has been extended before.
An honest correction to what this page said yesterday. Through the first two weeks of September the code swung between orange and red four times and the airport kept working each time, and this page said as much β that a red headline was usually not a reason to assume a closure. Today is the exception that shows why the colour code is worth watching anyway. Since 1 September this is the first time it has actually stopped flights.
How the earlier red spells compare. On the evening of 4 September arrivals were capped at five landings an hour instead of the usual twelve, and the limit was lifted the next morning; 9 September had the same shape. Today is a step beyond that β a full suspension of arrivals rather than a reduced rate.
Where to look first. SAC's own notice board is the fastest source: it went a month without a passenger notice and published twice today, hours ahead of most coverage. Check that and your airline, in that order. The colour code tells you about the volcano and the airspace; whether your specific flight moves is decided by the airport and the carrier. For scale: in early August the airport was shut for nine days and roughly a third of some 1,900 scheduled flights were cancelled or diverted.

INGV's weekly bulletin of 25 August describes explosive activity of variable intensity with ash emission from the Voragine, Bocca Nuova and North-East craters, and effusive activity in the Valle del Bove fed by vents at 3,060m and 1,900m β that effusive phase has since ended, and satellite thermal output has been moderate to low since it stopped. Volcanic tremor swung between low and high values through the week, with its source under the North-East crater. INGV also collected ash samples about 13km from the Voragine on the south-east flank, with a heavier ground load than the preceding days β worth knowing if you have a car parked on that side of the mountain. Open and unrestricted, and SAC has posted nothing new since. Its notice of 18 August, 10:00 reopened the closed airspace sectors and cancelled all restrictions following the VONA downgrade from Red to Orange; arrivals and departures returned to normal with immediate effect. Before that the caps moved almost hourly β 5 arrivals per hour, then 10, then 12 β which is worth knowing if you are booking during an active phase: the number changes faster than any article can track, so treat SAC's own notice page as the only reliable source on the day. That's still lighter than the nine-day full closure earlier this month, but it's proof this can drag on rather than resolve in a day. Of the roughly 1,900 flights scheduled during that earlier closure, about 36% were cancelled or diverted β affecting well over 100,000 travelers β with Comiso, Palermo and Trapani absorbing diverted traffic. Malta's airport was also affected earlier in the month by the same drifting ash. Under EU rules, this counts as an "extraordinary circumstance": airlines still owe you meals, hotel accommodation and transport if you're stuck overnight, even though they don't owe cash compensation for the delay itself. Check your flight status directly with the airline before heading over.

How active is Etna, really?
If you're seeing this page because you just found out Etna is erupting, the most useful context is this: it almost always is, in some form. Etna is the most active stratovolcano in the world, with documented eruptions stretching back roughly 2,700 years β one of the longest continuous records of volcanism anywhere on Earth β and it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 specifically for that exceptional, ongoing activity, not despite it. Between 1500 BCE and 1669 CE alone, historical records count 71 separate eruptions, and activity has continued at a similar pace ever since. A summit that's smoking, rumbling, or throwing the occasional lava fountain isn't a sign something has gone wrong β for Etna, that's closer to its resting state than an exception to it. Understanding the alert levels you'll see in the news
Two different color-coded systems get reported, and they measure different things:
VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) is what actually determines flight disruptions at Catania airport. It has four levels: Green (normal, non-eruptive), Yellow (unrest above background level), Orange (heightened unrest, an eruption may be underway with no or minor ash), and Red (a significant ash-emitting eruption is imminent or in progress). This is the number worth checking if you have a flight to or from Catania.
INGV's own volcanic alert level is a separate, broader civil-protection scale used for the mountain itself, covering everything from routine monitoring to evacuation-level concern. The two scales usually move together but aren't identical, which is why you'll sometimes see what looks like conflicting information β check the specific bulletin, not just a headline color.

Alongside the webcam, INGV publishes a near-continuous chart of Etna's volcanic tremor β a background seismic signal, distinct from a discrete earthquake, produced by magma and gas moving inside the volcano's conduits. It's measured in nanometers per second on a logarithmic scale: roughly 10-100 nm/s reads as quiet, 100-1,000 nm/s as moderate, and above 1,000 nm/s typically lines up with active eruptive phases.
